Initial intraoperative appearance of a temporal artery biopsy. The incision is made posterior to the hairline (hair shaved) to avoid damage to the temporalis branch of the facial nerve. The superficial temporal artery is clearly seen prior to complete dissection and biopsy. In this case, the intraoperative appearance of the vessel is normal. The histopathology confirmed a negative result. Image courtesy of Marcus M. Marcet, MD FACS.
